Cash Centre, Bank Negara Malaysia
Built in 1988, the former Bank Negara Malaysia Cash Centre in Shah Alam act as a distinctive institutional building reflecting the symbolism of traditional banking. Its architectural concept draws upon the imagery of a “key” representing security and a “treasure chest” representing the safeguarding of money. The latter is expressed through the building’s prominent barrel-vaulted central spine, which incorporates a continuous rooflight along its length.
Located within the Shah Alam city centre, the building was intentionally conceived as a secure and highly controlled facility for currency processing and distribution. Its strong geometric forms, enclosed character and carefully controlled openings reflect the functional requirements of a financial institution dealing with valuable and sensitive assets. Despite its prominent architectural presence, its position within the urban fabric meant that the building could easily go unnoticed by the surrounding public.
Today, the former Cash Centre no longer serves its original currency-processing function, following the development of newer automated cash-handling facilities by Bank Negara Malaysia. The building nevertheless remains an interesting example of late-20th-century Malaysian institutional architecture, representing an important chapter in the development of Shah Alam and Bank Negara Malaysia’s operational infrastructure.
