Masjid At-Taqwa, Keningau, Sabah

Masjid At-Taqwa, also known as Masjid Daerah Keningau, is a prominent religious landmark in Keningau, Sabah, serving as an important centre for congregational worship and Islamic activities within the district. Located along Jalan Sondoton Baru, the mosque is recognised for its distinctive architectural character and prominent presence within the local community.

The mosque adopts a contemporary Islamic architectural language expressed through strong geometric forms, angular roof planes and a prominent golden dome. Its composition is anchored by a central prayer hall and slender minaret, while the combination of green roof surfaces, white structural elements and gold-toned dome creates a distinctive visual identity. Repeated pointed-arch openings and Islamic decorative elements provide a contemporary interpretation of traditional mosque architecture.

Internally, the prayer hall features a spacious and expressive volume with timber-lined ceiling surfaces, exposed structural framing and a central domed element. Natural light enters through the surrounding openings, complementing the patterned prayer carpets, decorative mihrab and timber minbar. Islamic calligraphic elements, including examples of Khat Nasakh, further enrich the interior architectural character.

As the district mosque of Keningau, Masjid At-Taqwa continues to serve both a spiritual and community role. Its distinctive architectural form and integration of contemporary geometry with Islamic architectural elements have established the mosque as one of Keningau’s notable landmarks.
